A TTC driver fought off a would-be thief outside a downtown Toronto hospital early Tuesday morning.

The Wheel-Trans driver was parked outside of St. Michael’s Hospital at about 5 a.m. when a man boarded the vehicle.

The driver, who declined to be interviewed on camera, told CP24 that the man tried to rob him of fare money, leading to a scuffle.

In a dramatic moment captured by a CP24 camera, the pair wrestled for a bit before the suspect took off, despite losing his shoe during the struggle.

Police said the driver was not injured.

Officers are looking for the suspect.

TTC CEO Andy Byford said the transit agency is doing what it can to assist police in their search for the suspect.

Byford told CP24 that he is planning to contact the driver to make sure he is OK.

Counselling is available to the driver, if needed, Byford said.
