Toronto Fire says two people are safe after a fire tore through and destroyed a home in the Alderwood area of Etobicoke early on Monday morning.
Capt. David Eckerman said firefighters were called to a home on Thirtieth Street, just south of Horner Avenue, at 2 a.m. for reports of a fire.
He said the fire started in the bedroom of the home and spread into the attic and the rear of the home.
Firefighters encountered heavy black smoke upon arrival. The man and woman who lived in the home got out on their own and were taken to hospital, Eckerman said.
Paramedics said they were treated for smoke inhalation.
Eckerman said the fire was brought under control at 3:02 a.m.
The structure is considered a total loss, with damage estimated at $250,000.
