A 29-year-old woman is facing charges after Pokemon Go players were shot at with a pellet gun in Newmarket Saturday night.

According to police, officers responded to a 911 call stating that players of the game were being shot at by someone in the Main and Water streets area at around 10:30 p.m.

Arriving on scene, police were pointed to a two-storey apartment building where witnesses saw a woman shooting a handgun-style pellet gun from the roof.

A suspect was taken into custody inside her apartment inside the building, police said. A pellet gun was also seized.

“It is believed that the suspect fired at least four shots at the people playing Pokemon Go, but none were struck and there were no injuries,” York Regional Police said in a release Monday.

Police said they have received “a number of calls” from concerned citizens about groups congregating and travelling in the area.

“Police would like to remind members of the public and players that any distraction while walking on or near roadways can be hazardous,” Monday’s release advised.

“Players are reminded they are not allowed to enter private property if no trespassing signs are clearly posted.”

Those asked to leave private property who fail to do so could face charges, police warned.

Patricia Champagne, of Newmarket, is charged with assault with weapon, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
