Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 80, will undergo surgery on Friday to treat a cataract in his left eye, his government said.

Lula underwent “pre-surgery checks” on Thursday morning, and the surgery will take place on Friday, the Brazilian presidency said in a statement.

After the medical tests, the veteran leftist on Thursday went about his “normal work routine,” the statement added.

Lula plans to seek a fourth mandate in October presidential elections, shortly before he turns 81.

“I’m 80 years old, but if they knew the drive I have to govern this country, they wouldn’t mess around,” Lula said in December, adding “only those with an empty mind grow old.”

The government did not say whether the president will need to step back from his duties following the procedure.

Lula is scheduled to meet with .U.S President Donald Trump in Washington in March.

In December 2024, Lula underwent emergency surgery to stop a brain bleed linked to a bad fall two months prior.
