WATCH: Ship captain issues message following deadly hantavirus outbreak

Published:

Jan Dobrogowski, the ship’s captain, has issued a video message praising passengers and crew for their perseverance and calling for respect for their privacy.

The captain of the MV Hondius ship has praised passengers and crew for their “quiet strength” and “kindness” in a new video message following the deadly outbreak of hantavirus.

“The past few weeks have been extremely challenging for us all, as I’m sure you know,” Jan Dobrogowski, the ship’s captain, said in the video. It was unclear when the video was posted.

“What touched me the most, what moved me the most, was your patience, your discipline and also kindness, kindness that you showed to each other throughout.”

Three cruise ship passengers have died and there are at least six confirmed hantavirus cases, according to the World Health Organization. Hantavirus usually spreads from rodent droppings and is not easily transmitted between people. But the Andes virus detected in the cruise ship outbreak may be able to spread between people in rare cases.

A third Ontario resident is currently isolating in Peel Region, according to Health Minister Sylvia Jones, as reported by CP24.com journalist Joshua Freeman on Monday.
