‘Total lack of respect’: French President Macron hushes crowd at Africa summit

French President Emmanuel Macron confronts the crowd attending a presentation at the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya for being too noisy.

French President Emmanuel Macron interrupted a speaker at a summit in Nairobi on Monday to call for silence from audience members he said were being disrespectful during presentations.

Macron, who was not on stage at the time, took the microphone and addressed the crowd during the Africa Forward summit in Kenya’s capital after noise from attendees disrupted a speaker.

“I’m sorry guys, but it’s impossible to speak about culture, to have people like that, super inspired, coming here, making a speech with such a noise,” Macron said. “This is a total lack of respect.”

Macron then suggested people leave the room if they wanted to hold side conversations.

“I suggest if you want to have bilaterals or speak about something else, you have bilateral rooms or you go outside,” he said. “If you want to stay here, we listen to the people.”

The Africa Forward Summit brought together more than 30 African leaders alongside business executives and investors for talks focused on economic partnerships and development.

The gathering marked the first time France has organized the summit in an English-speaking African country. Among those attending the summit was Nigerian billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote, along with executives from major French companies including TotalEnergies.
