A crewmember has died after falling overboard from a Princess Cruises ship in the Caribbean Sea, the cruise line confirmed to CTV News Wednesday.
“Princess Cruises is deeply saddened to confirm the passing of a Princess crew member who has gone overboard,” the cruise line expressed in an emailed statement.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the crew’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
According to the cruise line, the crewmember fell overboard from the Regal Princess off the coast of Cancún, Mexico, on Monday. The ship departed from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Saturday.
Princess Cruises thanked local authorities and the crew of another ship, the Carnival Jubilee, for helping with the search and recovery.
No further details were provided about what led up to the incident, or why the crewmember might have fallen off the ship.
The cruise line added that grief support services are being offered to affected guests and crew.
The statement confirmed the ship is continuing along its pre-planned route with minor changes to the itinerary. The Regal Princess is expected to return to Ford Lauderdale on July 18, as scheduled.
The identity of the crewmember has not been released.
