When David Cifaldi slipped over some rocks during an outdoor hike with his friends, he expected to roll his ankle.
The Montana nurse was 16 kilometres into a hike up Granite Peak, the state’s highest mountain, with two friends on July 20, when he tripped.
“As I rolled over, I noticed one of my trekking poles laying on the ground,” he told KTMF, a Montana news channel.
The other one, he realized, was lodged somewhere far more perilous.
