Less than a month after almost 50 train cars derailed in a residential area of the town, residents of Repentigny, Que. may have been hit by a tornado.
Environment Canada said that residents in the area northeast of Montreal reported some damage after severe thunderstorms and “what may well be a tornado” around 2 p.m. on Sunday.
The Northern Tornado Projects out of Western University in Ontario said teams are currently collecting information to see if they will send crews to the region for further investigation.
They will determine whether it was a tornado within the week.
“There’s a lot of work that goes into it,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Kate Leclerc. “It’ll depend what information they have available. They like to look at satelite imagery, so if it’s cloudy, it could take longer before they get a good image where they would be able to find a track.”
Video and photos on social media show uprooted trees, houses with roof shingles blown off and debris flying through the sky.
After over 10 millimetres of rain fell on Montreal on Sunday, which included thunderstorm alerts, Leclerc said that the weather is set to improve with hot, humid temperatures on the way.
“The worst of it is pretty much behind us,” she said. “We might have some resisidual showers throughout the day, but not much expected for Montreal and then some good times ahead.”
On Monday, severe thunderstorm alerts remain in effect in the Monteregie and Eastern Townships, south of Montreal.
