Security stopped an alleged trespasser on Kamala Harris’ Malibu property on Friday night, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and her spokesperson, raising security concerns about the former U.S. vice-president.
“Last night, security personnel stopped an individual who illegally entered vice-president Harris and Second Gentleman Emhoff’s property before the individual reached the home,” said Eduardo Negrón, a spokesperson for Harris.
Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were not at the property, Negrón said.
“They are grateful to the security and law enforcement personnel who responded swiftly,” he added.
Deputies responded around 10:30 p.m. Friday to a suspicious person call and made contact with private security on the property, said Julia Ann Tafoya, a spokesperson with the sheriff’s department.
“The individual who was outside of the property upon our arrival was warned and advised by deputies to leave the premises and left voluntarily without incident,” Tafoya said.
Deputies took a trespassing report and will increase patrols as a precaution, she said.
The former U.S. vice-president and 2024 Democratic presidential nominee does not have a Secret Service detail.
U.S. President Donald Trump last summer revoked Harris’ Secret Service protection, CNN previously reported, though Harris would no longer have had such protection under federal law by this point anyway.
Former U.S. vice-presidents receive six months of protection after leaving office. Harris’ protection had been extended for an additional year via a directive signed by outgoing president Joe Biden, meaning it would have expired about two months ago had Trump not revoked it.
The incident came amid heightened fears of political violence in the country, with recent years seeing multiple assassination attempts against Trump and the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
In the aftermath of her loss to Trump, Harris indicated that she would take time to assess her next steps, which included considering a run for governor of California or another run for president in 2028. She later ruled out a run for the governor’s mansion.
Harris, who released a campaign memoir in late 2025 and embarked on a subsequent book tour, said in April that she’s “thinking about” launching another bid for the White House.
“I spent countless hours in the Oval Office, in the Situation Room,” she said at the 2026 National Action Network Convention. “I know what the job is. And I know what it requires.”
