Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and his Argentine partner Nicolas Keenan announced on Monday that they were expecting a baby with the help of an egg donor and a surrogate mother.
“A very special person is on the way. See you in 2027, little one,” the couple posted on Instagram, next to a photo of them holding a pregnancy scan image.
Jetten’s political party, D66, issued a statement saying the pregnancy was made possible by a couple of Dutch friends who already had children.
“There is no commercial surrogacy involved. The surrogate mother and the egg donor are known to Jetten and Keenan,” it said.
“They are pleased to be able to help fulfil the wish of the two fathers-to-be to have a child in this way.”
“We are incredibly grateful that, thanks to two wonderful women, we now have the opportunity to make our dream come true,” Jetten said in the statement.
The prime minister and his partner, a professional field hockey player, have been engaged since 2024.
“Surrogacy feels like a very special way to help make the dream of our dear friends come true,” Lisa, the surrogate mother, was quoted as saying.
Dutch law only allows non-commercial surrogate pregnancies, where the woman carrying the child is not paid for doing so.
