A 23-year-old man is charged with impaired driving after Toronto police stopped a wrong-way driver on the Gardiner Expressway early Friday morning.

Officers arrested the driver – and possibly prevented a head-on collision – when they stopped an eastbound vehicle as it travelled in the Gardiner’s westbound lanes near Parkside Drive at about 4 a.m.

Before the arrest, police got a call from a witness, who said the wrong-way vehicle was travelling near Islington Avenue.

No collision occurred, police said.

In addition to impaired driving, the man is charged with dangerous driving and driving with a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit. He is scheduled to appear in court in February.
