Toronto police say they have charged a York Regional Police canine officer in connection with an arrest made during a foot chase in the Queen West area last March.

Police say that York Regional Police officers were involved in an investigation in the area of Queen and Lisgar streets on March 30 at 4 p.m.

A male fled police and officers gave chase.

The fleeing male was found in the rear of a building at 1214 Queen St. W., near the corner of Queen Street West and Gladstone Avenue.

Investigators say that a York Regional Police canine officer took part in the capture and arrest of the male.

The male was allegedly assaulted during the arrest.

Toronto police did not say what led York police to the Queen West area prior to the chase.

On Wednesday, Const. Michael Partridge, 35, was arrested and charged with one count of assault and one count of assault with a weapon.

York Regional Police Const. Laura Nicolle said Partridge joined the police service in 2009 and joined the canine unit in 2015.

The York Regional Police Professional Standards Section is conducting a separate and parallel investigation into the alleged incident.

Partridge has been suspended with pay as per the terms of the Police Services Act.

He is expected to appear in court at Old City Hall on Oct. 27.

The province's Special Investigations Unit is not investigating the incident as it did not meet their threshold, Toronto police spokesperson Mark Pugash said.

The SIU is called to investigate any incident involving an Ontario police officer and a member of the public that leads to serious injury, death, or an allegation of sexual assault.
