Two women who were injured in a shooting at York University late Thursday were likely not the intended targets, Toronto police say.

One woman was shot in the leg and a second was hit by “shrapnel” when a gun discharged in a food court in the university’s student centre at about 10:45 p.m., police said.

Both women suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospital, paramedics told CP24.

No one has been arrested.

A lockdown went into effect after the shooting occurred at about 10:45 p.m. and it was lifted around 1 a.m. Classes resumed under tighter security Friday morning.

In a written statement, York University president and vice-chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri said the university has increased security patrols in response to the shooting.

Police also have an increased presence at the campus.

Shoukri also said university officials visited the victims in hospital to check on their well-being.

“I am appreciative to hear that both are receiving the treatment they need. I am thankful to understand their injuries are non-life-threatening,” Shoukri said.

He said the university is co-operating with the police investigation and offering support to the victims, witnesses and other students who need it.

“Our immediate focus is on supporting the two students and their families, and in providing counselling support for York community members,” Shoukri said.

University officials declined to comment on camera.

In a security bulletin issued early Friday morning, the university advised students that police had given the campus the OK to resume normal operations.

Police are still looking for a suspect, who fled on foot after the shooting.

The man is black, in his mid-20s and five-foot-eight to six feet tall, and he was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black coat.

Police are asking witnesses or anyone with information about the suspect to call investigators at 416-808-3100 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
