A central building at York university’s main campus was evacuated after a suitcase was found unattended in a women’s washroom.

The suitcase was found abandoned at around 1:12 p.m. in a second-floor washroom at Vari Hall, Toronto police said.

A short time later, the university advised students to evacuate the building.

“Exit Vari Hall immediately using nearest and safest exit. Do not use elevators,” the university said on its Twitter feed.

A Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive team is on scene to assess the luggage.

The university and police said the measure was precautionary while officers determined whether the suitcase posed any sort of threat.

At 4 p.m., the university said that classes would be cancelled at Vari Hall until 7 p.m.

Buses that normally stop at the building are also being rerouted to York Boulevard or Fine Arts Road.
