An Oakville woman found dead in her home an hour after her estranged husband was shot to death Thursday was murdered, according to police in Halton.

The woman has been officially identified as Katherine Newman, the estranged wife of Kyle Newman -- the man who was shot by police officers outside an Oakville police station late Thursday morning.

About an hour after the shooting, police officers were called to a home located about 15 minutes away from the station. Inside, they found the body of 43-year-old Katherine Newman.

An autopsy confirmed Friday that the woman was stabbed to death. She leaves behind three children, all said to be under the age of 12.

Police say they are still trying to determine if the woman's murder is linked to the incident involving her ex-husband.

Police shooting

The SIU is investigating the death of Kyle Newman because police were involved in the shooting.

In a news release, the SIU said Newman was fatally shot when officers went outside to deal with a man who was causing damage in the parking lot. Reporters at the scene could see a silver Nissan with visible damage and a police van with damage as well.

The SIU has assigned seven of its investigators and three of its forensic investigators to the case. Two Halton Regional Police Service officers have been designated subject officers, while eight have been designated witness officers.
