TORONTO - Ontario's governing Liberals are promising to kick in $75 million to help construct a new tower that will house world-class researchers at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children.

Health Minister Deb Matthews says the $400-million project will lead to important discoveries and innovations by putting 2,000 researchers under one roof.

Among the hospital's achievements is the invention of Pablum and the discovery of the cystic-fibrosis gene.

The 21-storey Research & Learning Tower, which is scheduled to open in 2013, is designed to allow researchers in different fields to interact with each other.

The project will also be funded by a $90-million grant from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, the federal body that funds research infrastructure.

The hospital's foundation has raised $50 million to date for the tower and is committed to raising another $150 million.
