TORONTO - The Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says it will launch an investigation into allegations of inappropriate conduct at the Toronto Humane Society.

The probe was prompted by a series of newspaper articles in which some people alleged animals were suffering because of a restrictive euthanasia policy.

The organization's chief inspector, Hugh Coghill, says it is required to investigate under the Ontario SPCA Act because the allegations relate directly to the welfare of animals.

Kate MacDonald, the chief executive of the animal welfare agency, says they are `extremely concerned' an affiliate is alleged to be conducting business in such a manner.
