STRASBOURG, France - The Canadian government is looking into reports that the U.S. navy lawyer defending Canadian Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr has been fired from the case.

Catherine Loubier, a spokeswoman for Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon, who is attending the NATO summit in Strasbourg, France, says the department is seeking more information on the reported dismissal of Lt.-Cmdr. William Kuebler.

Media reports say Kuebler's dismissal by the Pentagon follows an internal investigation by Guantanamo's Chief Defence lawyer, Col. Peter Masciola, launched into Kuebler's conduct in February.

Kuebler,  has been known for his aggressive defence of Khadr, 22, a Toronto native accused of killing U.S. army Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Speer with a grenade during a firefight in Afghanistan in 2002.

Khadr was 15 at the time.

Kuebler has been recognized by a B.C. civil liberties group for his work on Khadr's behalf.
