Police say they have acquired over 500 guns and over 13,000 rounds of ammunition through a program that encourages people to turn over their firearms for new digital cameras and photography lessons.

"Pixels for Pistols" kicked off on Wednesday in hopes of acquiring unwanted guns - even if they are not registered properly.

Police say the amnesty program, in partnership with Henry's, will have the weapons safely destroyed so that they don't end up in the hands of people who could use them to cause harm.

Program organizers showed off 20 handguns Tuesday night that one Toronto resident had turned in.

People are urged not to bring their guns to police stations. Instead, they should call police at 416-808-2222 to arrange a pick up.
