OTTAWA - A Toronto company is voluntarily recalling grated Parmesan cheese sold in various B.C. stores due to a possible Listeria risk.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to consume Cremona Grated Dairy Product by Arla Foods because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The affected products include Canadian Parmesan in 230-gram and 455-gram packages sold at Famous Foods at 1595 Kingsway in Vancouver, and Cremona Reduced Fat Grated Parmesan Cheese in various sizes sold at Thrifty Foods locations in Victoria, Saltspring Island, Sidney and Saanichton.

The CFIA says there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. However, consuming food contaminated with this bacteria may cause listeriosis, a food-borne illness.

Symptoms of listeriosis can include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.
