While investigators continue to probe what caused a small plane to crash in Markham on Tuesday, officials have released the name of the pilot who was killed.

Paul Jess, 54, is believed to have been flying to a Burlington air field, where he usually parked his plane, when he crashed into the roof of a toy manufacturing company called Thinkway Toys.

Jess, along with a female passenger believed to be his live-in girlfriend, was killed when this four-seat plane dropped out of the sky after taking off from Buttonville airport. The crash scene is located just across the road from Buttonville.

Jess was the co-owner of a Burlington pet hotel called Holly's Pride.

The company's general manager Amanda Fraser later released a statement saying, "On this day, the Holly's Pride family would like to inform you of a tragedy affecting us all. Paul Jess, co-owner of Holly's Pride, Hotel for Pets in Burlington & Ancaster has suffered a tragic and fatal accident."

The Transportation Safety Board says it will take at least a few weeks before it will be able to determine a cause for the crash, provided enough evidence remains on the scene to facilitate an investigation.
