A 56-year-old man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after he was shot in the head outside a Vaughan business in what police believe was a targeted attack Thursday afternoon.

York Regional Police say the victim was shot at least once while he was sitting in a vehicle in a parking lot at 8110 Keele St., just north of Highway 7, at about 4:30 p.m.

The address is home to Superior Machining and Repairs Ltd., the victim's workplace.

The victim, a Brampton resident, was in critical condition when he was transported by ambulance to Sunnybrook Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. He remained in critical condition Thursday night.

Police say a 52-year-old Markham man was arrested at a residence in Markham and is now charged with attempted murder. The victim and suspect know each other, but police didn't elaborate on their relationship.

The shooting wasn't random and it wasn't a robbery attempt, police say.

Officers taped off the parking lot and entrance to the commercial building as a forensic identification team searched for evidence at the scene.

It's believed the firearm hasn't been located, but York Regional Police Insp. Fred Moffatt says police were preparing to execute search warrants on at least one residence and one vehicle associated with the suspect.
