Police scaled down the search for a missing Toronto teen Saturday, after upgrading the search to the highest level Friday.

Mariam Makhniashvili, 17, was last seen by her family when she left for school with her brother last Monday.

Only about six officers continued to search for the girl from a command post in north Toronto Saturday, said Sgt. Rick Gibillini.

Police announced in a news conference Friday that the search was upgraded to a level three, the highest possible, and had about 40 officers searching the area where the girl was last seen.

"We accomplished a lot yesterday (Friday) and today (Saturday) we're just following up on some stuff we didn't manage to get to," Gibillini said. "We're just tying up some loose ends, just following up on some tips and going over some areas we weren't able to access yesterday."

Gibillini said tips are pouring in, mostly sightings, and police are following up on every lead, but so far "nothing has come to fruition."

If no progress is made by the end of the weekend, police will re-evaluate and consider expanding the search, he added.

Police again urged people in a five-kilometre radius of the apartment building where a missing Toronto girl lived to search their properties for signs of her.

Makhniashvili did not arrive home from Forest Hill Collegiate Monday and the school principal said Miriam was not in any classes.

Police said the actions are completely out of character for her.

Makhniashvili has been in Toronto for less than three months.

Police said to the best of their knowledge she had no friends, and her only relatives in Canada are her parents and her brother.

Her parents have said there was no dispute that would have prompted Miriam to run away, and police say they have no evidence to the contrary.

Police say there is no evidence of foul play, but are not ruling anything out.

Police have contacted relatives of the girl in Georgia to learn more about her, and say they are looking at the possibility she may have encountered problems with students of Russian background because of the Russia-Georgia conflict.

The girl is described as 5-foot-3, with light-brown shoulder-length hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing black pants, a light blue shirt and a dark blue jean jacket. She was carrying a large black backpack with a green stripe.
