Toronto police have identified a suspect arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with a fatal shooting in Little Italy on Monday.

Dean Wiwchar, 26, of British Columbia, was arrested without incident on Gerrard Street near Parliament Avenue at around 2:30 p.m.

At a 9:30 p.m. press conference, Det. Sgt. Terry Browne was tight-lipped about the circumstances that led to the arrest.

"This is a very extensive investigation that we are conducting," he said. "I can't give you details of what led to the arrest."

Browne told reporters that Thursday's arrest was the result of a joint investigation between the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Toronto police and other law enforcement agencies.

He also thanked the community, media and public for providing information that helped lead to the arrest.

Browne wouldn't comment on whether a weapon had been seized during the arrest, but said that Wiwchar was in possession of multiple pieces of identification under different names.

Wiwchar was not known to Toronto police prior to the arrest, Browne said.

Wiwchar is scheduled to appear in court Friday morning where he will be charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of 35-year-old John Raposo.

Browne wouldn't comment on whether additional charges would be forthcoming.

On Monday, Raposo was shot to death at the Sicilian Sidewalk Café on College Street in what police have said was a targeted shooting.
