Toronto police are reminding city residents to keep a close eye on small children and dogs following a rash of recent coyote sightings.

On Tuesday evening, police shot and killed a coyote in the wooded area near Cherry Beach after the animal began acting aggressively towards officers.

Officers were at Cherry Beach investigating a separate incident.

This isn't the first time a coyote has acted aggressively towards a human being.

In January, an eight-year-old girl was bitten by a coyote while playing in a friend's backyard on Cannonridge Circle in Oakville.

After a hunt by police, animal control workers and Ministry of Natural Resources officers, a coyote was later located in the area and shot dead.

Back in 2009, residents living in Toronto's Beach area were on high alert after a coyote snatched a six-year-old Chihuahua out of a private backyard. The coyote dragged the dog away from the property.

Although police say coyote sightings are frequent in the city, they strongly discourage anyone from feeding the animals and suggest any aggressive or unusual behaviour be reported to authorities immediately.
