Toronto police have arrested 15 people in the Tamil protests on University Avenue and Dundas Street on Wednesday afternoon.

Police started moving in on protestors when a containment zone south of Dundas Street was compromised, blocking traffic on the street.

Hundreds of police officers were on the ground and several were on horses. Police say six people are expected to be charged with breach of peace and nine will be charged with mischief interfere with property.

Police say they have to ensure public safety is protected and will continue to work with those who wish to express their views in a peaceful and safe manner.

There are reports that a woman suffered minor injuries in the scuffle and has been taken to hospital.

University Avenue between Dundas Street West and Queen Street West is now closed. The protest, which has been peaceful for the most part, started on Sunday night.

The two groups were involved in a minor scuffle on Tuesday morning as police decreased the size of the protest area.

Protesters want the U.S., Canada and the United Nations to stop military action by the Sri Lankan government against the Tamil people.
