A Toronto councillor under police investigation is seeking re-election.
Parthi Kandavel, who represents Ward 20 Scarborough Southwest, registered to run on Friday, according to the city’s elections page.
So far, there are nine candidates vying for the council seat, which Kandavel won in a byelection in 2023.
The Ontario Provincial Police is investigating allegations against Kandavel but has not shared any details or updates on the matter.
On May 10, the councillor revealed that he is the subject of an Ontario Provincial Police investigation, which he said took him by surprise.
“I’ve worked hard to earn the trust of the people of Scarborough Southwest, which I take seriously. I’ve strived to maintain the highest standards of ethics and integrity and will address any allegations that suggest otherwise,” he said in a social media post.
Sources told CTV News Toronto that the police investigation appears to be related to at least two properties in his ward.
A city hall source said that Kandavel allegedly asked for money to move a highrise project on Kennedy Road forward. In the other matter, a developer’s representative told CTV News that Kandavel had asked for a “considerable” amount of money for another development to proceed.
No charges have been laid at this time.
Oct. 26 is election day in Toronto.
