TORONTO - A coalition of groups is calling for the release of people arrested during the G20, saying they are "political" prisoners.

They accuse police of a gross violation of civil and human rights in detaining more than 1,000 people on the summit weekend.

About 16 remain in custody.

They say they want an independent inquiry into how demonstrators were handled.

In one case, the Council of Canadians said a transit worker on his way to work was detained for 30 hours.

A street medic says many suffered serious injuries at the hands of police.

One lawyer says a class action or other civil action is under consideration.
