School boards in the Greater Toronto Area are asking the provincial government to change the upcoming school year's Christmas schedule.

The boards, including the Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board, want the Ministry of Education to make Dec. 23 the last day of school before Christmas during the 2011-12 school year.

Students would then return to class Jan. 9, 2012 after a two-week break. The number of days off would remain the same.

The school boards argue the proposed change would give families more time together.

Currently, the 2011-12 school calendar has classes ending Dec. 16, with students returning Jan. 2.

The Ministry of Education says 71 of Ontario's 72 school boards have requested the change. Provincial officials are expected to make a decision this spring.

The TDSB oversees almost 600 schools and 250,000 students, while the TCDSB serves more than 91,000 students in 201 Catholic schools.
