The Toronto District School Board has announced plans to install solar panels on the rooftops of 450 schools.

The panels, which will be fully installed by 2031, will generate enough electricity to power about 6,000 homes. The electricity will help offset school electricity costs.

"Our rooftops represent a major untapped sustainable-energy resource," TDSB Chair Chris Bolton said in a press release. "By installing solar panels on them, Toronto communities will get clean green energy, 450 schools will receive much-needed roof repairs and TDSB students will experience an unparalleled real-life lesson in sustainable living."

The project, which is a partnership between the TDSB and Amp Solar Limited, is part of the Go Green: Climate Change Action Plan.

The plan was approved last year and outlines several ways the TDSB can make member schools more environmentally friendly.
