TORONTO - The Stratford Shakespeare Festival's production of "The Tempest," starring Christopher Plummer, makes its big-screen debut today.

The film is showing this afternoon at select Cineplex Entertainment Theatres from B-C to Quebec.

Encore performances will screen at select Cineplex locations next Wednesday, and also on Sunday, November 14th.

Des McAnuff, artistic director of the theatre festival in southwestern Ontario, says filming stage shows preserves performances that would otherwise be just a memory in the minds of audience members.

"The Tempest" is packed with impressive illusions that McAnuff says were "relatively easy to capture" on film.

This is Stratford's second film in less than two years after the hit 2009 release of "Caesar and Cleopatra," which also starred Plummer.

And McAnuff says he wants to film more stage shows in the future.
