A developing weather system is expected to bring cold temperatures, strong winds and a mix of precipitation to Toronto and much of southern Ontario on Monday, Environment Canada says.

In a special weather statement issued Sunday morning, Environment Canada said the system will bring precipitation, likely beginning as rain, to eastern Ontario Sunday night then spread westward to reach the Toronto area by Monday morning and as far west as London by afternoon.

The rain is expected to quickly change to wet snow as temperatures fall to just above zero.

For many regions, the wet snow will persist through Monday night into Tuesday morning before ending. The greatest amount of snowfall is expected north of the city, in areas including Haliburton, Muskoka and Algonquin, where up to 10 centimetres of snow is possible.

Strong winds will accompany the system, with gusts up to 70 kilometres per hour.

The temperature in Toronto is expected to hover around 5 C.
