The suspect in the murder of Toronto police Sgt. Ryan Russell has been released from hospital and is now being held in custody at a detention centre.

Richard Kachkar, 44, has been charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

Sgt. Russell was killed last week Wednesday, while trying to stop a stolen snowplow allegedly driven by Kachkar.

More details are slowly emerging about Kachkar, who was born in Edmonton, but lived in British Columbia before moving to Ontario. He has no fixed address, and was known to live in shelters.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, thousands are expected to turn out for Sgt. Russell's funeral.
