VAUGHAN, Ont. -- Public health officials say a toddler from Toronto has died at a home daycare north of the city that was later ordered closed due to unsanitary conditions.

York Region Public Health Services spokeswoman Colleen Gareau says a two-year-old died Monday night at the daycare in Vaughan, Ont., which was unlicensed but could legally care for up to five children under the age of 10.

Gareau says the cause of death is not yet known and that an autopsy is scheduled within the next two days.

She says health investigators later checked the residence and identified seven health and safety infractions, including failing to implement infection prevention, failing to provide a hand-wash basin and unsafe food conditions.

Gareau says the daycare was ordered shut down on Tuesday.

She says the Ministry of Education has been notified and is conducting an investigation into whether the daycare was operating legally.
