TORONTO - The Toronto Humane Society is bringing in an outside expert to review its operations after animal cruelty charges were laid against five employees.

The society issued a statement Saturday saying it will hire an animal care expert as interim executive director to conduct a thorough review of the society's operational practices.

And the society is promising to install a well-respected veterinarian to head its clinical team to ensure the best possible care is being provided to animals.

The humane society was rocked in the past week when the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals raided the agency and arrested its president and four other staffers.

One official described the shelter as a "house of horrors," saying a mummified cat was found along with living animals with health problems.

The humane society has condemned the OSPCA's tactics and a spokesman has predicted those arrested will defeat the unproven charges against them in court.
