For the third time over the past two weeks, a Toronto pet owner is reporting that his dog was electrocuted while out for a walk.

The man and his dog were near King Street and Strachan Avenue when the dog received a shock from a live wire located under a city sidewalk.

It was the fifth Toronto dog that has been shocked since November, and the man says he knows someone else in his neighbourhood whose dog has also been electrocuted.

The news has jolted program to cover inspections, a complaints hotline and equipment replacement.

Officials maintain a combination of melting snow on sidewalks, salt and aging infrastructure is causing the problems.

The Humane Society recommends that dog owners worried about electrocution get neoprene boots for their dogs, which drastically reduce the impact of the shocks.

Anyone who encountered a charged plate is asked to call Toronto Hydro at 416-542-8000.
