TORONTO - Toronto commuters are being reminded to hit the brakes when a streetcar's doors swing open, as police and transit officials kick off a week-long safety blitz.

Police say they're working with the Toronto Transit Commission in the "Take Time to Check" campaign, which runs until Sunday.

Education is one goal of the safety drive, though police are also paying extra attention to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians who ignore transit-safety laws.

Police say anyone thinking of blowing by a TTC vehicle making a stop should think twice -- and so should riders considering a mad dash to catch a bus or streetcar.

The blitz follows recent week-long campaigns focused on drivers and cyclists who break traffic laws.

Over 1 million people take the TTC every day.
