Toronto police say a marijuana grow operation hidden within a Scarborough townhouse unit posed a significant hazard to people who lived in the complex.

In a news release, police said the townhouse unit's electrical system was compromised, posing a serious fire hazard, and there were no working smoke detectors in the home, located near Neilson Road and Finch Avenue East.

Because of the fire hazard, Toronto Hydro employees were brought in to disconnect the unit from the city's electrical grid.

Police said about 600 pot plants, valued at about $600,000, and growing equipment were seized when officers raided the Wingarden Court home Wednesday night.

No one has been arrested.

Police said the dangerous conditions within the home put the safety of the complex's residents in jeopardy.

The situation could have been disastrous for unsuspecting residents had a fire broken out, police said.
