The Toronto Transit Commission will hold the first of four public meetings Monday night in an effort to educate commuters on upcoming bus route changes.

The meeting will be held tonight at Metro Hall, 55 John Street, between 7 p.m and 9 p.m. in room 308 and 309.

In total, 48 routes will be affected. The TTC plans to shift buses from routes that typically have low ridership to routes that are in desperate need of additional service.

Transit officials say they are acting ahead in anticipation of reaching record-level ridership of 487 million users by the end of this year.

The proposed changes were first discussed at a TTC board meeting on Jan. 12 but a decision was made to defer the discussion until Feb. 2 in order to give the public more information about the plan.

At the meetings, the public will have a chance to speak out on the proposed changes and they will also hear about alternate routes they can use.

Three other public meetings will be held this week across the city:

  • Tuesday, January 25 – 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. -- North York Central Library, Memorial Hall, 5120 Yonge St, direct access from North York Centre Station
  • Wednesday, January 26 – 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. -- Scarborough Civic Centre, Rotunda, 150 Borough Drive, direct access from Scarborough Centre Station
  • Thursday, January 27 – 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. -- Elmbank Community Centre, lower level, 10 Rampart Road, southeast corner of Finch Avenue West and Martin Grove Road. Buses to the location are 36 Finch West, 46 Martin Grove and the 191 Highway 27 Rocket.
