The TTC says it wants to get rid of the old, static-filled communications system rider's struggle to hear when there are delays to report on the subway system.

The transit commission says signal issues are to blame for the poor-sounding announcements.

TTC spokesperson Danny Nicholson says sometimes radio communications don't come through clearly at track level.

"The tunnels are underground and sometimes it is difficult to get the sound through the train," Nicholson says.

The TTC is looking at buying a new communications system but there's no timeline in place.

Nicholson says future subway trains will have video screens, and hopefully messages can be delivered to riders that way.

"We apologize for the fact on many occasions the messages are muffled," he says. "We are working on the situation."
