The TTC wants to award a contract for a new "open payments" fare system by the end of November while the current council and chair Adam Giambrone are in power, the Globe and Mail reports.

In a 226-page document obtained by the Globe, the transit commission will seek bids from private partners to build and run a payment system that would let users pay with either credit, bank or reloadable fare cards.

The system would compete with the province's Presto smart card system that has already been implemented on GO Transit and York Region's Viva bus system.
