Toronto transit riders, get ready to dig a little deeper to get around on the TTC.

A fare increase takes effect Sunday after a 10-cent hike was approved by the TTC's board of directors at a meeting earlier this month.

The increase is expected to generate an extra $30 million a year, TTC chair Karen Stintz said previously.

Board members approved the fare hike as the TTC faces a laundry list of route cutbacks. No service changes will be made in January, and the TTC is working on a plan to maintain service levels on its busiest bus routes, starting in February.

Cash fares will remain at $3 for adults and post-secondary students, and $2 for younger students and seniors, but the price of tokens and passes is increasing.

Monthly metropasses now cost $126 for adults (an increase of $5) and $104 for students and seniors.

Under the metropass discount plan (MDP), adults will be charged $115.50, while students and seniors will pay $93.50.

Here's the pricing breakdown for tokens:

  • Adult fare: $7.80 for three tokens, $18.20 for seven
  • Student/senior fare: $8.75 for five tickets, $17.50 for 10
  • Post-secondary student fare: $7.80 for three tokens, $18.20 for seven
  • Child fare: $6 for 10 tickets

A day pass now costs $10.50, while weekly passes will cost $37.50 for adults and post-secondary students, and $29.75 for younger students and seniors.
