A cleanliness audit has found that none of Toronto's subway stations are as clean as they should be, according to the report released Monday.

The TTC audit, conducted in May, ranked the 69 subway stations on a scale of one to five, one being the lowest and five being the cleanest.

The TTC aimed for level 4, but not one station achieved that ranking. Sixty-six of the 69 stations ranked at level 3, which is classified as "casual inattentiveness."

TTC Chair Adam Giambrone says the organization will be requesting more money for cleaners at the city's budget committee meeting in September.

He says he wants to hire an additional 60 full-time workers to make the subway stations cleaner, however it will cost between $2 and $3 million.

Littering is not an issue -- it's cleaning the grime off the walls and floors, Giambrone says.

Right now, the TTC is planning to hire 30 temporary staffers for a six-month cleaning blitz that will begin this fall

In addition to the official document audit, TTC vice-chair Joe Mihevc is inviting riders to conduct their own audit of the system's cleanliness. Riders can go to their local station on July 17 at 11 a.m. and fill out a questionnaire.
