More wet weather has prompted Environment Canada to issue a special weather statement with upwards of 20 more millimetres of rain coming over the next 24 hours.

The national weather agency said parts of the GTA have already received “significant rainfall amounts” this week.

“A few more rounds of showers and embedded thunderstorms are possible through Thursday. Portions of the region have received significant rainfall amounts over the last few days. As a result, any further rainfall could have significant impacts,” Environment Canada wrote.

“Rainfall warnings may be issued for some regions. Rainfall amounts will likely be highly variable across the region. Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Don’t drive through flooded roadways. Avoid low-lying areas.”

A fog advisory was also in effect for Toronto on Wednesday but it has since ended.

Thunderstorms created a messy commute this morning as heavy rain flooding roadways around the GTA.

‘Wet and waterlogged roadways’

Ponding and pooling could be seen on many roads across the region and collisions were reported on GTA highways, including Highway 404.

“OPP Highway Safety Division is reminding motorists to use caution while travelling, as wet and waterlogged roadways may impact driving conditions,” provincial police wrote in a post on social media on Wednesday morning.

“Motorists are encouraged to slow down, increase following distance, and adjust your driving to road conditions.”

While Toronto will likely see a break from the rain late Wednesday morning and afternoon, more thunderstorms could begin this evening. A high of 21 C is expected on Wednesday.

Rain and mild weather is in the forecast for the rest of the workweek. Environment Canada is calling for a high of 20 C on Thursday and 19 C on Friday.

The weekend will begin with above seasonal temperatures, hitting 15 C on Saturday, but the cooler temperatures settle in on Sunday, which will see a high of just 6 C, about six degrees cooler than normal for this time of year.
