LONDON -- British media are reporting that police investigating rape allegations dating from years ago have arrested an 82-year-old BBC radio presenter.

Police, as usual, did not identify the man, but said an 82-year-old man was detained Wednesday in his home in northwest England's Cheshire on suspicion of "historic" cases of rape and indecent assault. British media, including the BBC and the Press Association, said he was Stuart Hall, a well-known sports and game show presenter.

Hall has enjoyed a career spanning 50 years and was awarded an honour by Queen Elizabeth II last year for his services to broadcasting and charity.

Police said the suspect has been taken to a police station for questioning. They refused to confirm or deny his name.
