KOLKATA, India -- Thousands of angry Muslims have marched in Kolkata in eastern India to protest an anti-Islam film produced in the United States.

Police officer Rajashri Roy says the protesters chanted "Down with America" as they marched Thursday to the city's American Center library.

He says they threw stones at police who blocked them from approaching the nearby U.S. Consulate. They later dispersed peacefully.

The protesters belong to the All Bengal Minority Council and All Bengal Minority Youth Federation.

The film "Innocence of Muslims," which denigrates Islam's Prophet Muhammad, has sparked protests throughout the Muslim world.
