High school teachers in York Region and Niagara represented by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Association have rejected tentative deals reached with their school boards earlier this month.

The tentative deal in Niagara was announced on Nov. 19. The York Region deal was reached two days earlier.

Both had been approved by Education Minister Laurel Broten ahead of Tuesday’s ratification votes.

Sanctions with both boards that had been suspended when tentative agreements were reached will now begin or resume, a release from the OSSTF on Tuesday night said.

In York Region, sanctions will commence at a to-be-determined date, the release said. Sanctions will resume in Niagara on Nov. 28.

In a statement released Tuesday night, Borten expressed disappointment with the results.

“I am disappointed that OSSTF teachers in York and Niagara did not ratify locally bargained collective agreements,” she said.

“Reaching negotiated agreements that meet our shared fiscal challenges while protecting small class sizes, full-day kindergarten and teacher jobs has always been our preference."

A third group of teachers from Grand River ratified their agreement.
