York Regional Police are warning residents about a telephone scam after several people were called and asked to buy fake warranties for their cars.

The scammers have targeted residents of the region over the past month, calling to offer extended vehicle warranties that have proven to be illegitimate. Local dealerships have told police that such calls are not normal aspects of their business.

The scam's perpetrators have tried to get credit card information from their targets. In some cases, the callers already had some of the victims' personal details.

Police are advising anyone who gets a similar call to avoid giving out any private information.

They advise concerned residents to:

  • Check warranty details with the dealership. They will be able to provide the current warranty status for vehicles sold there
  • If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Do some research before handing over any money.
  • Be cautious. Check out any caller by requesting written information, a call back number, references and time to think over the offer.
  • Do not give out personal banking information or any other personal information to someone over the phone unless you know they are legitimate
  • Do not be afraid to hang up the phone
  • Do not be pressured to send money or provide a credit card number to take advantage of a special offer or deal
