Canada’s Wonderland says it is too cold and rainy to open its waterpark for the season this weekend

Unseasonably cold and rainy weather has prompted Canada’s Wonderland to postpone the long-awaited opening of its waterpark this weekend.

The amusement park was set to open Splash Works on Saturday but in a post on social media, staff confirmed that they will be pushing back the opening date due to “inclement weather”

It went on to say that the waterpark will now open for the summer season on May 31.

“The rest of the park continues to be open daily,” the post concluded.

The news comes as Toronto braces for another round of rain on Friday. Although the rainfall warning previously issued for Toronto has now ended, Environment Canada says the city could still see a significant amount of precipitation over the next 24 hours.

The national weather agency says rainfall amounts of between 10 and 15 millimetres are possible today.

Toronto has seen a particularly soggy week with temperatures that have been well below seasonal for this time of year.

Friday will see a daytime high of just 12 C, about nine degrees cooler than the average daytime high of 21 C.

‘Jacket and sweater weather’

Speaking to CP24 on Thursday, Environment Canada’s Dave Phillips said while rain is common in May, the wet weather this past week has been unrelenting.

“This should be maybe jacket weather or sweater weather but it is jacket and sweater weather together,” he said.

“The only good thing is that about a third of Mays we get snow in Toronto. There is no snow here. We haven’t even had a frost day but we are just stuck in the middle with the same monotonous kind of weather day after day and we are getting kind of fed up with it.”

Slightly warmer weather is on tap for the weekend, with daytime highs of 16 C on both Saturday and Sunday respectively.

More rain is expected on Saturday but sunshine will return to the forecast on Sunday.

“The stretched-out complex of low-pressure systems that has been plaguing the region for days with rain and unseasonably cool temperatures is finally pulling east,” CP24 Meteorologist Bill Coulter said Friday.

“The weekend looks a bit more comfortable. Saturday will be variable to mainly cloudy with the risk of a few lingering light showers, some sunny breaks and a high in the mid-teens. Sunday will offer more sun to bookend the day, with slightly warmer temperatures.”

He said while some warmer days are in the forecast next week, Toronto residents may need to wait for the first week of June for a true taste of summer.

“The end of next week and especially the first week of June is looking a lot warmer,” he noted.
